Sonus Chordarum – The sound of the strings

On the streets and in taverns, in huts and castles, for singng and dancing – the sounds of strings were heard everywhere.

The medieval string instruments gittern and citole were among the most important instruments in Europe during the 13th and 14th centuries. This concert program invites you to a world of sound that feels familiar and distant, nostalgic and transformative, comfortable and challenging.

The medieval band Själ

For more than a decade Själ has been making interpretations of 13th century musical masterpieces from all over Europe. Bringing the audience on a journey to listen to German minnesang, melodies of the Occitan troubadours, the Spanish cantigas and more. Inspired by the great variety of cultures in medieval Europe, Själ’s sound is unique and gives new life to a time long gone.

Ensemble Mediata

The word Mediata comes from a medieval ornament where the tone between two notes is used as a “mediator.” In the same way, Ensemble Mediata wants to be a mediator between medieval music creators and today's audience.

By reading and exploring sources together and practically trying out ornaments, intonation models and interpretations, the ensemble wants to penetrate the medieval musical treasure and make it richer and more accessible to today's musicians and listeners.

Swedish bagpipes

The bagpipe has a long history in Sweden. The instrument was already played in the Middle Ages, but began to disappear in industrialized society. Gustav plays a bagpipe that is based on preserved 19th-century instruments, primarily from Dalarna.

The instrument fits both older and more modern music, but comes into its own most with the polskas of Swedish folk music - a tradition Gustav is deeply familiar with.
Perfect if you are organizing an event with a 19th century theme!
